ZR1 And C8 Corvette Test Mules Spied

News images of what appears to be a C7 ZR1 and mid-engined C8 Zora has surfaced and they’re both going through a round of winter testing.

By seeing them side by side, we can get a better look at what’s the same and what’s different between the ZR1 and its successor. From the A-pillar to the B-pillar, both models look almost identical as they seem to be sharing the same A-pillar rake, windshield, roof panel, side windows, and side mirrors.

What Chevy has changed is the C8’s front end which looks to be shorter and the rear seems to be longer. Car And Driver managed to sift through all the camouflage to spot slotted brake rotors instead of cross-drilled designs, low-mounted transversely oriented muffler, and the round tail lamps some Corvette enthusiasts are wishing for may not be making a comeback.

There’s still no word on what the C8 Corvette will be powered by. Perhaps something that requires more cooling as indicated by those large slots behind the doors. Maybe we’ll see a pushrod V8 or the 6.2-liter dual-overhead-cam LT5 V8.

Whatever the case, manufacturing preparations are already underway at the factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky. $52 million has already been invested into aluminum spaceframe manufacturing in-house and plenty more has gone into the relocation and expansion of the Performance Build Center engine facility, adding a new paint shop, and another $290 million for new assembly technologies and processes along with a massive solar array.

I can't imagine them patenting that supercharged quad-cam LT5 and not developing it and putting it in the new C8 ZR1. Quad cam LT5 alone speaks ZR1 and it just goes hand in hand. Only sensible thing I can see happening.

Biggest disappointment from all the spy coverage floating around is the fact that we don't have any videos and that might be for a good reason, might be something we can pick up from that (engine sound) which they don't want us knowing yet.

I wish we would get some sort of video that lets us hear even a bit of the exhaust note. But we still have a good amount of time to see more and more spy shots before we get anything. Maybe when they're road testing we'll be able to get something better.
