New C8 Corvette Could Deliver 850 HP

At least that’s the rumor floating around the internet. Jalopnik found some leaked documents claiming that the mid-engined C8 Corvette could produce up to 850 horsepower.

Said document comes from IHS Markit, an automotive market trend analysis company, and it has since been taken down, which gives credence to its legitimacy. Luckily automotive publications like Jalopnik has kept a record of it and the document mentioned two new twin-turbo V8 engines. Both are set to go into production at GM’s Tonawanda, New York plant and both the 4.2-liter and a 5.5-liter may join the supercharged 6.2-litre V8 in Chevy’s new C8 Corvette.

Reportedly, a range topping 5.5-litre unit could deliver up to 850 horsepower and 720 lb-ft of torque. The 4.2-liter engine is expected to produce a lower, but still impressive 420 hp.

Also noted were details of the C7 Stingray’s future, which seems to go on for a few more years. Listed on the document was Y1BC, with Y1 referring to the current C7 Corvette. On paper, it’s said to be in production until 2021. If that’s true, we can expect better fuel economy from the C8 along with tax incentives from Chevy in an effort to phase out the C7.

Though analysing trends is what IHS Markit does, these are still just speculations.

I heard elsewhere the 4.2L engine could make around 650 hp, which would make it almost on par with the C7 Z06. Which engine does everyone think will be the most popular once the C8 is out?

I think 5.5-litre engine with 850 horsepower and 720 lb-ft of torque will be the most popular among Corvette buyers. Also, I hope that the current 6.2 will be an option in it as well.

I'm starting to think Chevy is spreading themselves out too thin because they also have plans for a hybrid version of the Corvette called the E-Ray. To me it seems better to just focus on the hybrid, yes they will lose some corvette fans in the process but will have set themselves up in accordance to the future progression of the industry.
