C8 Corvette May Skip Manual Transmission, But Should They?

According to Car And Driver, the C8 Corvette may not be offered with a manual transmission and only come with a dual-clutch transmission.

We’ve seen spy shots of the prototype and now we know that the C8 Corvette will be harbouring Tremec’s TR-9007 dual-clutch automatic transmissions. The 7-speed transmission is known to have a 664-lb-ft torque capacity and handle a 9000-rpm maximum input speed. With an expensive new transmission from Tremec, Chevrolet may not have the funds to develop a traditional manual gearbox as the research and development of it could prove too pricey to justify.

It’s not surprising for Chevy to go this route as dual-clutch transmissions are proven to be better on track thanks to its uninterrupted power deliver when shifting gears. But what if those lap times aren’t everything when it comes to your C8 Corvette?

There is a downside to cutting out the manual gearbox completely as dual-clutch transmissions aren’t so great at low speeds. The lack of refinement on slow country roads may be enough of a deterrent for shifting enthusiasts.

So the question is, should Chevrolet give the C8 Corvette an optional manual transmission? Submit your vote in the poll above and let us know if you want a manual gearbox, don’t want it, or don’t care.

This poll shouldn't even be questionable.

I can definitely see the trans needing to be rebuilt after minor power upgrades IF it comes out with the power we're expecting.

Enthusiasts may go at me with pitchforks but I really don't care if the Corvette comes with a manual transmission. Will just have to wait and see how the 7-speed transmission performs at low and midrange.

be right back, gonna go sharpen the pitchfork

But I see where you're coming from. I personally am really hoping it'll come with a manual trans. I would honestly be inclined not to buy it if it's not available.

Some people may want the manual option to get a better feel of the C8 but it's really down to what you prefer. I can see there being the case of no manual = no sale kind of deal for some people.

Of course. That being said, there are still other vehicles out there to buy.

But, isn't this just a rumor? R&D may cost more but can Chevy afford to alienate the manual enthusiasts when it comes to the C8?

Yea I don't think anything has been confirmed yet. See that's the issue, it's a big give or take. I personally think it'll be worth it as there are still many enthusiasts that look for a manual high horsepower vehicle. Understandably though, it's not "cheap" to R&D a new transmission, especially because of the power threshold needed.

As much as I hate to say it, automatic is the way to go since from that you get a level of efficiency in performance that can't be matched by the average drivers driving ability with a manual transmission. Also on the marketing side of things it also works out for Chevy since the vette will look better on paper compared to the competition.

That's undeniable. BUT that doesn't mean it shouldn't come as an option. Let them use the automatic for the testing, and the beating on for track times and what not. But have a manual trans for the enthusiast that actually wants to drive it for the feel.
